Getting the Most Out of Your Occupational Therapy Sessions

A guide for children, teens, adults, and families at Meaningful Activities.

At Meaningful Activities, we focus on what matters most to you or your child. From daily routines to confidence at school, home, or in the community. Our sessions are built around meaningful progress, real-life goals, and strong partnerships with families and support teams.

Here's how to make the most of your time with us.

Before Your Session

Adults and Young People

Take a moment to reflect on what's been challenging lately, what's been working well, and what might be getting in the way of your goals. Consider bringing anything that helps us understand your world: NDIS goals, recent reports, or a quick update on what's changed since we last met.

Parents and Carers

Think about your child's daily routines: dressing, mealtimes, transitions, toileting, play, or sleep. Most challenges happen at home rather than just at school, so sharing what you're seeing day to day gives us valuable insight into your child's real experiences.

If your child receives therapy at school, consider checking in with your therapist mid-term or during holidays to ensure strategies are still working across different settings. Remember, you don't need to wait to be contacted. Feel free to reach out proactively if something changes or if you're unsure how to use a strategy at home.

During the Session

For Everyone

Be open with us. There's no judgement here. Our sessions work best when we understand what's really happening in your life. Don't hesitate to ask questions like:

  • "What does this look like in real life?"
  • "How do I support this at home, work, or school?"
  • "Can you show me a way that fits our routine?"

With Children and Teens

Children learn best through movement, play, and connection, which is why we make therapy fun and meaningful. For teens, we create space to build life skills, develop identity, and foster confidence.

Parents and carers are an essential part of the process. We'll show you how to support therapy goals outside of sessions and explain the reasoning behind every strategy we suggest.

After the Session

Try the strategies we've discussed at home or in everyday life but remember, it's perfectly okay if things don't go smoothly at first. Bring that feedback to your next session so we can adjust our approach together.

Consider keeping a quick note, voice memo, or photo of things that worked well (or didn't). This helps us track progress and tailor our support to what works best for you and your family.

Proactive communication makes a significant difference, especially during school holidays, end-of-term check-ins, or when new challenges arise. Whilst we may not always have time for every check-in, you'll get more from therapy when you stay involved and maintain open communication with us.
